Printable: Vespa Scooter Origami Paper

origami pencil boxRaise of hands, who likes vintage Vespa scooters?  I personally have always found them charming. Perhaps it’s because I associate them with Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday.  So when Dessy recommended a Vespa for an origami paper print, I was on board.

origami pencil box with vespa printSince the Vespa print is larger than usual, I made the origami paper larger.  The printable paper is 7in-by-7in.  I also made it this size so it would be easy to fold into a pencil case.  The pencil case origami instructions I used required the paper to be folded into 7 equal sections.  That said, the paper is still too tiny to make a functional pencil case.  However, it does make a cute case to fit little trinkets.

For the top photo, I used the origami paper to fold a heart.  It also happens to be the perfect size for a drink coaster.  Directions for the heart can be found at Origami Club.

DIY Washi Tape Pencil Toppers

DIY Washi tape pencil toppers

I can’t remember the last time I posted a washi tape craft on Zakka Life.  I do know It’s long overdue.  So today I’m sharing how to make washi tape pencil toppers.  These toppers easily slide on and off pencils.  They’re also easy to make.

Supplies:

Wide straws – I use bubble tea straws that you can get at the Asian market.  You can also look for smoothie straws.  Unfortunately those pretty paper straws do not work for this project.  They’re too skinny and will not fit over the pencil which is important.

Scissors

Washi tape – any color or print

DIY Washi Tape Pencil Toppers 31.  With scissors, cut your straw into 2in pieces.

2.  Place a small piece of washi tape on top of the straw.

3. Cut the edges of the tape and stop at the straw.  Refer to dotted lines in fig. 3.

4.  Fold all pieces of tape down on the sides of the straw.

DIY Washi Tape Pencil Toppers 45. Wrap a piece of tape around the top of the straw to cover up the tape from step 4.

6.  Continue to wrap pieces of tape around the straw until it covers the whole thing.  You can stick with the same color or change the colors/prints as you go.

7. Wrap a 5in piece of washi tape around the top of the straw.  The tape should extend out and come together (sticky sides together) to make the flag.

8. Trim the flag by cutting out a “V” shape on the side of it.

DIY Washi tape pencil toppers 2To personalize the pencil toppers, write a name or initials on the flag.

Life Hack: How to keep your Handbag Clean

Handbag hackAfter lots of searching for the perfect handbag (which could be a post in itself), I finally found one.  There was just one problem, this bag was made of soft leather.  In other words, this handbag could soak up dirt quicker than a toddler in a mud puddle.  That combined with me having to set it on the ground created a real dilemma. My solution, the shower cap hack!
Handbag hack 2Out of necessity, I came up with the idea of covering my handbag with a shower cap anytime I set it down on the ground.  When I’m not using the shower cap, I just turn it inside out and keep it in my bag.  So far, the only drawback from this hack is my family making fun of the shower cap.  I think I can live with that.

*If you have a larger handbag, I recommend using a stretch to fit food cover (basically a giant shower cap).

Printable: Speech Bubble Origami Paper

printable speech bubble origami paperThis week’s printable was inspired by comic books.  I decided to leave out the common images associated with comic books.  Instead, the paper features speech bubbles and dots.  This way the paper is more versatile.  I also like that you can write your own words in the bubbles.  This origami paper lends itself well to folded envelopes and notes.   For the envelope pictured above, I found the directions at Craft Studios.
