DIY Fish Cupcake Toppers for Boy’s Day

Washi Tape Cupcake ToppersDid you know there’s another holiday besides Cinco De Mayo that falls on May 5th?  It’s the Japanese holiday Boy’s Day.  It’s also know as Children’s Day in Japan but many people still celebrate the holiday as Boy’s Day.  Families fly carp fish kites, a symbol of Boy’s Day.  The carp fish represents strength and courage.

In celebration of the holiday, I made fish cupcake toppers out of washi tape.  You don’t have to make them just for Boy’s Day.  They could be used for a birthday party or for Father’s Day.  Directions below.

Washi tape in light prints – printed tape adds more depth opposed to solid colors

Black pen – I used a micron pen, size .05

1.  Fold a piece of washi tape over the top of the toothpick so the sticky sides meet together.

2. You’re now going to cut the fish shape out that’s outlined in black.  To get a nice symmetrical fish, I recommend cutting it out as follows:

Cut towards the toothpick where you see the peach lines on both sides.

Start to shape the fins by cutting where you see the yellow lines.  Cut facing towards the toothpick.

Finish off the fin by cutting where you see the green lines.  Make two cuts facing towards the toothpick.

Now facing away from the toothpick cut where you see the blue lines to finish off the fish shape.

4.  With pen, draw the eye and fish gill directly onto the tape.

Are any on you celebrating Boy’s Day?  What traditions does your family have for the holiday?
